Organic Crib Mattress Deceptions

To be labeled "organic", a product only has to be 95% pure. The truth is, there are very few companies that offer 100% organic baby and infant mattresses.

Some manufacturers may use organic cotton and wool but spray the outer with hazardous flame retardant chemicals. Because they use organic cotton and wool though, they label it "organic". Wool is a natural fire retardant and meets the fire retardant standards of the CPSC so unlike many of our competitors, our mattresses are not sprayed with these hazardous materials.

Consider if the organic baby mattress is wrapped in polyethylene. Many companies use this as an outer moisture barrier but polyethylene, regardless of the grade, is a synthetic material made from chemicals. It is a not a naturally occurring substance as are cotton, wool and rubber. Remember, infants are more susceptible than adults to fumes and toxins which are emitted by all plastics to some degree.

Many companies use "organic" wool that is processed in plants that process other fibers, so it gets chemicals and fibers in it. Others use synthetic, non-disclosed hidden fibers to cut costs. Still others may use rubber that is not 100% natural latex rubber (derived from the rubber tree) and contains toxic VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) which emit toxic fumes. 

Also, beware of so-called certifications. Green Guard, which is a third-party testing company is used by many of our competitors as certificates of approval. To be classified as organic, a product has to be 95% pure. Green Guard allows for even more contaminants and chemicals than at the organic classification level.

Lastly, while you want your organic crib mattress to be firm in addition to being 100% organic, you do not want it so hard that you subject your infant to flat-head syndrome. Taking this into consideration, our mattresses are made with the desired firmness in mind but also have an outer quilted padding to help prevent flat-head syndrome.

In addition to using only the purest ingredients for manufacturing that are tested 100% pure, our organic infant and baby mattresses are tested annually after the manufacturing process by a third party company with the strictest of standards.
