Steps To Create A Safe Baby Nursery

Have you or someone you know excitedly made preparations for your new baby's arrival by painting, installing new carpeting, and buying a crib with a brand-new synthetic or foam mattress for their nursery.  So many well-intentioned mothers do when in fact they are doing more harm to their babies without realizing it.

Unless a mother knows what is causing the problem or knows what symptoms to look for, the baby will continue to be exposed to these harmful elements. Thankfully, there are ways to avoid or correct these problems through non-toxic approaches. Here are a few simple steps:

The Right Mattress & Bedding

When shopping for a mattress for your little ones crib, consider a 100% organic crib mattress from made by Ecobaby Organics. In addition to crib mattresses, we offer organic baby mattresses and futons to fit cribs, portacribsbassinets and cradles and more.

All of our Ecobaby organic crib mattresses are tested 100% chemical-free and are non-toxic. They ARE guaranteed to be 100% organic crib mattresses. No other manufacturer of organic crib mattresses actually test their raw materials to ensure purity. These high quality materials is what sets our Ecobaby organic crib mattress apart from the lesser quality mattresses made from inferior U.S. cottons and wools.

In a study conducted by Anderson Laboratories, six different brands of waterproof crib mattress covers were found to emit toxic fumes. One was made of polyolefin and the other five were made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and covered with polyester or cotton.

If you must use a non organic crib mattress, at least consider using an organic baby mattress pad or organic puddle pad. Though this is not a 100% solution, you are providing some barrier between your baby and the mattress.

The Right Paint

Mothers first expose their unborn babies to chemical fumes when painting and breathing in the toxic fumes. The baby is then exposed to the same chemical fumes after birth. Babies who are affected may experience central nervous system irritation resulting in increased agitation, tension and decreased feeding.

Paints and finishes release low levels of toxic gases into the air for years after application. But with the development of non-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, we are now able to buy toxic-free paint. Just ask for it at your local paint store.

The Right Carpet

As inviting and soft to the touch as carpet may be, it is a reservoir of mold, mildew and dust mites. When I was growing up, we had shag carpet in all of our rooms, including our bedrooms, because it was the latest fad. Underneath lay beautiful hardwood floors. We were cultivating a nice collection of who knows what.

As a first step in improving your nursery, remove any old carpet. Avoid replacing with new carpet as it contains harmful chemicals releasing toxic fumes into the air. If possible replace with hardwood flooring if it doesn't already exist. If carpet is a must, choose completely untreated carpeting with natural latex or jute backing.

The Right Furniture

When furnishing your baby's nursery, consider solid wood furniture. Formaldehyde in the glues used during manufacturing continually out gas for the entire life of the piece.

Most Amish furniture is made from solid wood and very Eco-friendly. Also, try to avoid new plastic changing tables or other plastic furniture as they also release toxic fumes for many years.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of a safe and toxic-free nursery for your baby. Babies deserve a healthy & happy start in life. We hope you will take these few simple steps in providing your baby with a safe and healthy environment. You and your baby will sleep better!
